Let me introduce you to Percy

Sophie (the seamstress) for Lycra Not Required has been creating some beautiful drawings on the computer of what the latest prototype of the first LNR piece of clothing will look like.

He is called Percy, a round about town kinda lad, he will be there for you bicycle or no bicycle.  Rain or shine.  Cruising or coffees, Percy will be look rather dapper upon your back.

Any thoughts? Do leave a comment  dear readers!

And so we ordered the goods in; threads, fabrics, buttons... oh and even some Swarovski crystals.  It's going to look amazing.

I've been a busy bee.

It's been a long time since my last post but have been a busy bee making and creating.  I thought I would share with you all the process of screen printing.  For the jacket there are labels and patterns to create for the fabrics and a lovely way to achieve this for the prototype (plus enjoy the final few weeks of my degree!) has been screen printing, or foiling.  So instead of pulling ink through the silk screen you pull a special glue through....

....then, well, click on the page at the top saying 'printing' and you'll find more photos there.

Summer office

What sunshine we've been having! Too warm and nice to stay inside, I moved my 'studio' outdoors >
and I now all those hours spent drawing in the sun mean my left arm is somewhat more brown than the other!

I have been busying drawing the final, refined design for the jacket.  I will create a new page with detailed drawings of this soon.  In the mean time, take a look at 'the jacket' page at the top of the blog.  I have added some more drawings from my sketchbook as the project has been developing.

Let me know what you think, just leave a comment with some thoughts.  I would greatly appreciate it!

velo love

Bristol's first vintage velo was yesterday.  Tom and I went off to tootle along with 120 other tweed lovin' fellows for a 10 mile cruise in the sunshine.

I spent the afternoon before tarting up Claud for the event >

I also tied on lots of LNR tags to him to bring along to the party, to give out to people I got talking to and leave as little presents on their bicycles.

It was such a sunny sunday, maybe a little warm for tweed wearing but lots of fun. Hello to anyone who has found themselves here after finding one of contact tags on their bicycle.  Take a look at my other pages and please do leave a comment on this post of what you think about this project and my designs so far!

Thursday 7 April 2011

oh what a lovely day.

The sun is shining and I wish I was outside enjoying it, flying around on my bicycle.  But instead I am behaving myself and sat with all the windows and doors open, some good music on, working on my sketchbook.

Today I am drawing out the basic design I have for the jacket and playing around with different colours and fabric samples I have.  I don't want it looking too girly.  No pretty pinks or flowers allowed. yuck.

Hope you are all having a lovely day.  Please take a look at the pages

found nr the top of this blog and leave your comments. Please do.

Bristol's first Vintage Velo

One fun way to spend a lovely spring afternoon; Bristol's first Vintage Velo.  I have signed up to this with some fellow bicycle buddies, will be some fun getting dressed up in tweed and going for a rather jolly 10 mile cruise ending in cream tea and games!
I can't wait.

a bicycle.

I cycled along the Bristol-Bath railway route yday.  I can't believe how flat it was! Makes a nice change from Cornwall's hills.  !5 miles of flat sped by on my fixie.  Had a slight hiccup, or strike of luck when I came across The Cycle Shack in Bristol nr the path and ended up buying a rather lovely Claud Butler... so excited.

Friday 1 April 2011

Look at the pages.

I have begun to design the jacket now which you can see on the pages near the top of the blog.
'a little taster' shows the visual outcomes so far for this project, a small booklet and tags. 'the jacket' shows the first sketches I have drawn for the jacket I will make.  There will be more specified drawings coming in the next few days, along with samples of fabrics I have begun to collect.

Take a look and let me know what you think :-)

Welcome

Welcome to my blog. Cycling in the city has been set up to act as communication between myself and those who love (or hate) cycling in the city.  Currently I am embarking on the final stage of my BA (hons) degree in 3d design at the University College Falmouth.  For the final brief I thought long and hard about what I really love and what interests me...

I love cycling and spurred on by road accident between me, my bike and a car I researched into cycling as it seems to be a bike boom going on right now.  Bristol has had over £20 million invested through becoming the nation's first Cycling City and London too has enjoyed a fruitful year with the beginnings of the Barclay's cycle hire scheme, 'super' highways and in general, more attention upon commuting.  However what struck me, through reading the ever increasing amount of blogs, websites and news articles about cycling was that still, the number one factor that deters people from cycling altogether or is their biggest issue when cycling in the city is safety.  Safety of themselves, of other other cyclists and other road users.

And so, here is the next stage in my design project; asking people what they think about cycling in the city and do they feel safe.  I want to hear your opinions on this matter so please get involved and leave a comment.  I will try to post an online version of the questionnaire I am currently distributing. (january 2011)

The result of the first stage of my project which was research based is now to produce a physical outcome, LNR> lycra not required. More info to follow (feb 2011)
